Learn Where Adapt Was Born
Personal journeys: the “Why” behind it all…
The idea of Adapt Performance & Training was born while Alicia and Andy were completing their graduate degrees. At that time, they were going through their own challenges and began brainstorming different ways they could combine their ongoing knowledge of mental and physical health. Their personal experiences played a huge role in their passion and drive to be where they are today.
In 2013, entering their second year of graduate school, Andy was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Andy being the “glass always full” kind of guy, looked at the doctor and said “I’m not taking any time off school.” Just nine months prior he watched his grandfather go through chemotherapy without letting it slow him down before he eventually lost the battle to lung cancer. Enduring his cancer treatments while pursuing his doctorate in Physical Therapy was a bumpy ride, but he took his grandfather’s mindset with him and pushed through. During that time in Andy’s life, he pushed himself harder physically and mentally than he knew was possible. There were days he could not get off the couch, experiencing major fatigue and nausea. But when he did, he made sure to get to the gym because he recognized how much better he felt following a workout. He developed a new found appreciation for what fitness and exercise could do for you both physically and mentally. After six months of chemo and three weeks of radiation, he got the desired news everyone prayed for. Andy was cancer free! Andy’s experience with cancer transformed his perspective of what it meant to be a physical therapist and strength training professional. He adapted a new strategy that allows his clients to train beyond their typical health and fitness goals to a more lifelong approach with the focus of optimizing every aspect of physical and mental health.
Alicia struggled mentally and physically as a result of Crohn’s disease for many years. After numerous medications, hospitalizations, surgeries, and chronic stomach pain she made an intentional decision to change things up and treat her mind and body from a holistic perspective when they moved to Florida for graduate school. Alicia’s passion for relationship and mindset coaching comes from her own difficult experiences in life. She developed a growth mindset, specialized in relationships, and practiced specific tools that enabled her to work with her mind and body, instead of against it. Through extensive training and practice, Alicia has discovered resources and a process that helped her overcome self-defeating beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviors. And now through Adapt, others facing similar situations are benefiting from Alicia’s first-hand experience and training as they grow and achieve more fullness of life.
Both Andy and Alicia’s medical scares taught them the connection between the mind and body on a deeper level than they understood before. Their business vision finally grew to fruition in 2022 when the opportunity arose to expand Adapt into a one-stop shop for mental and physical health and wellness. They welcomed Alicia’s twin brother Brandon, who is a Physician Assistant and offers many complementary services. Adapt members and clients appreciate having multiple health and wellness providers in one space as being both convenient and collaborative for their benefit of well-rounded care.
It is truly a family affair at Adapt Performance & Training. Andy, Alicia, and the entire team hold strong values of empowerment, authenticity, and growth and want you to enjoy the same feeling of being a part of the family.
