Do I need a referral from a Physician for Physical Therapy?

No! The state of North Carolina allows “Direct Access” to Physical Therapy. This means you are not legally required to have a Physician’s referral before seeing a Physical Therapist for an evaluation or treatment. However, some insurance coverage may require you to have a referral or “authorization” before they will approve payment. You should contact your insurance company beforehand to determine the process they require, or contact us for assistance. If you are under the care of a Physician and you require Physical Therapy, you have the freedom to choose which Physical Therapy clinic to receive your treatment from!

Why do you not accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance because we provide a high standard of care that insurance is not able to reimburse. Our treatment approach includes one-on-one care for a full hour using skilled, hands-on techniques and functional exercise to help you achieve your individualized goals. This is in stark contrast to many outpatient Physical Therapy clinics who co-treat multiple patients at once due to current insurance reimbursement. We believe you deserve better care and a better experience than this, and we refuse to allow an insurance company dictate your care. Upon request, we can prepare a superbill for you that you can easily submit for proof of your session(s) to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement.

Can I bill my insurance for reimbursement?

Most insurance companies, with the exception of Medicare, will provide payment for services received "out-of-network". The amount of reimbursement or application towards your deductible is dependent on your insurance plan. You can send "self-claims" to your insurance company for your treatments at ADAPT by, for example, printing claim forms from your insurance company's website and sending it in with the necessary receipts and treatment codes that will be provided upon request. If you call your insurance company to inquire about this, you should ask about reimbursement for "out-of-network Physical Therapy" expenses sent in via self-claims.

***Medicare Beneficiaries: If you are a Medicare beneficiary and are adamant about seeing us for your care, it is important to note that we are not participating Medicare Providers. However, we can provide Physical Therapy services to Medicare beneficiaries as long as you do not involve Medicare in payment for Physical Therapy services and if this decision is made of your own free will. In the case that you do want to use Medicare benefits for Physical Therapy services, we unfortunately cannot provide you with treatment at our clinic but would gladly help you find a Medicare provider in your area for you.
